Calhoun is a good rotation. There are several opportunities to learn the various aspects of pediatrics including common lab procedures as well as performing circumcisions.
I felt the clinic load to be somewhat exhausting (approximately 30 patients per day) but you get used to the busy schedule.
Hours: Nursery - 7:30 am (earlier if necessary) Call in the morning to see how many babies are in the nursery.
In patient Rounds - 8:00 am
Clinic- 9:00 am - 12 or 1:00 pm (depending on which attending you follow for the day)
Lunch - 12 or 1 pm to 1 or 2 pm
Clinic - 1 or 2 - 6 pm (later if clinic is busy)
No call, weekends off. On Wednesday there is the option of taking a half day, working the whole day, or taking the day off. The decision is left to the student.
On Thursday there is another option of accompanying Dr. Joyave to the sister clinic or remaining at the main clinic.
Compared to MCG you will see more patients and participate in more procedures. Personally I logged in 250 patients by the end of the rotation and that was only picking my most interesting patients. Most MCG students logged in approx 40 patients.
Housing is located in Rome. I was lucky enough to have my own room for the entire six weeks. There can be anywhere from 2 to 12 girls at one time. The male housing is located next door. Three bathrooms and one laundry room are in the house, but I never had a problem using the shower. There is a TV in the living room, but NO cable I advise bringing DVD's as well as lamps since the rooms have very poor lighting. The grocery stores, including Walmart and Kroger are not far, there are also plenty of fast foods restaurants. Calhoun is about 30 to 45 minutes from Rome so leave early in the morning. Late is NEVER good!!!
Dr. Joyave (attending) is nice, but he expects you to work hard. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, it shows initiative.
Over all I enjoyed my experience. Although I have to admit, I was more than ready for it to be over. I truly love children, but the work is quite monotonous.
Please feel free to contact me if further questions arise.
