Helpful Instructions for the Medical Student in the High Risk Nursury
Depending on the medical student's interest, the time here can be taylored to maximize your experience.
1. Make sure to get with the resdents you will be working with and Paula - Nurse Practitioner Extraordinaire - to organize the schedule for the month. This schedule is necessary to know who has the pager at what time in order to go to a delivery so that you may go with the resident or with the nurses. This schedule will also allow you to pick the days of call that you want so that you can have the free time when you want it.
2. If you are interested in transports then make it known to Dr. Cason who is in charge of them. You can participate in these in a few ways depeding on your interest. If you are on campus you can have the staff page you so that you may go with them. Work out the optimal level of interaction that you can have with this particular service with Dr. Cason. It will vary depending on what your other responsabilities are on campus.
3. If you want do do procedures, talk to the nurses. They're the ones that do them and they can teach you how.
4. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THESE BABIES LIVES- You will be responsable for a variable number of patients. You should be able to do these following things for them every morning.
a. BE HERE - Different people work at different speeds; obviously, so work out how long it will take you to do everything before morning report at 8:30. It would take me about an hour and a half to do everything with some time to spare to eat breakfast. I needed more time some days depending on difficulty of the patients and patient load
b. Ask the nurse what has happended to the baby overnight.
