The clerkship at NorthWest Georgia Regional in Rome is great. Dr. Khaja is the attending you will be spending the most time with--you can tell he is really enthusiastic about teaching students. You will get to see a wide variety of patients. If you have any special interests, you also have the opportunity to spend time in a forensics unit, an adolescent unit, or an MR unit. Your typical hours will be 8am-4pm. You will be assigned 3 call nights, which are never on weekends and generally last 4pm-9pm. Email me if you have any other questions. ~Rachel rkologinczakmd@students.mcg.edu

I had a good time and learned a lot of stuff in Rome. Dr. Khaja is a great guy and his psycho-pharmacology lectures are really good, I actually felt like I understood it all very well when he explained it. Dr. Sanchez is very generous with his time, and gave us a 1 hr informal talk on whatever we were studying at the time. Dr. Morgan is very friendly to the students, he's an MCG grad (not well received by the social workers though).
If you're going up to Rome, watch your back while you are on the wards -- seriously. Even trying your best to stay out of the way and being calm and nonconfrontational, you can expect to be verbally threatened by patients, and physical fighting breaks out on the wards up there about once a week (in my limited 6 week experience). I mean, I'm a fairly average sized dude and I felt physically intimidated a few times. I was warned by the staff to stay away from certain individuals who had a history of trying to spread bloodborn illnesses, etc. This rotation served to outline the tragedy of mental illness, and an appreciation for the brave souls like Dr. Sanchez who work to improve the lives of the people who suffer from them.

This rotation has been changed to 3wks in Gainesville and 3wks in Rome. You'll get to see the difference between private and state facilities. Dr. Khaja is a great preceptor. He tries to teach whenever he has the opportunity, and he's always open to questions. He also gives great pharmacology lectures. You will be expected to prepare 1 or 2 presentations on any topic of your choice. The hospital has recently made some logistical changes so things may seem a little chaotic at first. Have your notes written by 8:30am because at 9am, all of the patients from the different units are moved to a single building, called the Treatment Mall. They attend group sessions at the Treatment Mall and meet individually with Dr. Khaja and his treatment team (nurse, social worker, case worker) until 3pm, and then, everyone returns to their units. I usually got out around 3 or 4pm and had tons of downtime. The patients at Northwest GA Regional are much more sick than the ones you'll see at Laurelwood. Many of the patients are psychotic and can become violent, so be aware of your surroundings and the people near you. I was almost attacked a couple of times. I think it's more difficult for a young female to work at the facility because some of the male patients can be sexually inappropriate.
As for housing, there are a couple of adjacent houses for students. I stayed in the 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house for 8 people. There is a tv but no cable. There was also a station with 3 computers, each connected to its own printer, for student use, and wireless internet.
Overall, I'd say I had a pretty good experience on this rotation. I got to see a variety of psyc diagnoses and had lots of opportunities to learn how to interact with the mentally ill.
