Gainesville for Psych is good, I think that since its a new site things are still a little rocky until Dr Black can decide how he wants to do things. So for the "good": Dr Black is really nice and excited about having students, he doesn't pimp and he's really laid back so its not stressful at all. Laurelwood has an acute psych unit, a chemical dependence unit, and an adolescent unit; which means that you will see a wide range of psych diagnoses. You'll primarily work with Dr Black, but Dr Noga does ECT and you can spend some time in the main hospital shadowing that, which I thought was kind of interesting. There's no call, but to make up for it you stay later on Tuesdays (until around 7) and hang out with Intake, which actually tends to be a little boring. You'll go with them to do the initial assessment of patients to be either admitted or sent to another facility (which is interesting), but after that, its really just sitting while they do the paperwork and try to find placement for the patient. The hours are typically 8:30-5 (except Tuesdays when you stay late and Thursdays when he lets you leave at lunch- which is free). The bad is that you have a lot, I mean A LOT of down time. Now that may not be bad for you, but I get bored really easily, and you can only go through First Aid so many times. =) There are groups on the units you can go to to pass time, which are usually really good; I played basketball and did karoke with the kids unit on slow afternoons. Also Dr Black also sees outpatients and you typically won't be sitting in on those unless its something really interesting (I sat in on a session of a kid with Aspergers), but overall I probably only went in 3 or 4 of his sessions, which means that you can either hang out with patients on the units or study in the lounge.
Umm what else ? Housing is good. There's a "townhome", its 2 bedrooms 4 beds. I shared with one other person (a PA student) so we had our own bedrooms, but that will really depend on who's there. The neighborhood at first seems a little shady, and people will literally be standing outside the apartment in the front AND back being loud at 3 AM. There's a college nearby though, so I think its just cheap student living more than a bad area.
wow, i feel like i wrote a lot. =) I hope this is helpful
I'm feeling very ready for the psych shelf (i'm not really complaining about the down time, I'm sure when I get to OBGYN I'll be wishing I had some down time!) ;D
