BEFORE you get on the elevator to the OR from the locker rooms: Cap on head! your foot covers too
At the end of the hallway is the scheduling board ('in theory')
-The numbered stickers are the OR rooms
-The tape goes: start time, patient's name, procedure, Attending's name
-No clue what yellow stickers mean
-Blue stickers are positional: If a blue stickers are beside the case it means the patient is in the holding area around the corner; If blue sticker on the tape with the patients name on it it means the patient is in the OR room (the best thing is to stick your head in and see, the board is hardly updated to real time)
So you have the case room # and you are set to go into dum-dum-dum THE CORE..
check: hat, face mask, scrubs (no white coat), foot covers
walk through sinks and find your OR room number, peep in and introduce yourself as a JMS so-and-so to the surg tech and nurse at a convenient time and offer to get your own gear. Find your size gloves (size 6 ittybitty, most guys are a 7,7 1/2) and gown and give to circulating nurse or tech. Go to sinks remember to put on the EYE shield and lead gown if your team uses Fluoro or xray. Scrub in like lectured- fingertips up but arms at chest level. In the room be patient and they'll help you suit up. Have fun!
PACU= Recovery room at the end of the hall
"Ask if it is good time to ask a question"
Oh and if your name is Kelly- realize it is a popular instrument name- so far I know of a retractor, clamp, and tunneler,
oh and also a "sweetheart" for the fellas to be aware of
The Adson's toothed pick-ups (forceps) are used for skin
