I definitely think this is a valuable rotation. The hours are a little longer than most of the other Subspecialties. But, you will get some tips on placing Foley's, reading KUBs, and see a lot of patients in the clinic. Probably will not get much OR time

I don't want to be a urologist, but this was a great rotation. The faculty (Drs. Lewis, Brown, Becker, and Donohoe) are all great physicians and teachers, and most of the residents were cool too. LOTS and LOTS of really busy clinic -- ask if you can go to the OR, and maybe you'll get to, but otherwise, you'll be steamrollering through patients 9-5 five days a week. No weekends, and sometimes no floor patients (yay!). They tend to give out good grades, too. I also got to see some things I hope never to see again -- a very very severe case of priapism and a gentleman s/p GSW to thingy come to mind. But overall, I recommend this rotation highly.

I did peds on a short week (thanksgiving, 3 day week) and VA. Both were really great. They encourage student involvement on both. Peds - Donohoe was great and an upbeat guy (although he sometimes got a little loud if someone -usually staff from another dept- were interfering with his patient care). Lots of circumcisions, undescended testes, mom's worried about their boy's thingy causing emotional trauma because it was "deformed" in their opinion, and reading KUB's. VA - Implants, prostate cancer, a vasectomy. You will have to do a rectal, but not too many. You work mostly with the residents, and they were great. They were the ones that actually did my eval.

You do one week each of MCG and either VA or Peds. Mondays are long but dinner is usually provided at the evening conference, but the rest of the days are at least better than core.
MCG: awesome people. latch on to the chief and older residents when you can. the interns are just too new and busy to teach much. as a female, you might feel intimidated asking men about their ED, but the pts don't seem to mind as much as you do. inpatients can vary from many to none. some surgeries are often a small field, so you might now see much. you'll learn more in clinic anyway.
Peds: Dr. Donohoe is hilarious. He really likes his job. He played air guitar in the OR one day. It's just you, him, and one resident on the service. Busy clinic & OR, and he moves fast (I think it's all the coffee he drinks), but if you can keep up with him, this week is great.
