You'll be happy you chose this SS. It is an awesome rotation. Morning report at 6:30 and rounds usually follow. Usually 3 clinic days and 2 OR days, but occasionally you go to the OR during a clinic day if somethihg needs to fixed immediately. You are done on most days by the time the Surgery afternoon lecture starts (4pm). No weekends and no call. The docs and residents are super cool. They may pimp you (mostly on Anat), but they also really try to help you and teach you the relevant information. Wear comfortable shoes on surgery days or bring them with you (i.e. tennis shoes). Enjoy this rotation, cause it's lots of fun.

There's generally three specialities: Peds Ortho, Shoulder/joint, VA, Trauma, Spine, and Sports Medicine. Occasionally they'll do hand, but it's sort of incorporated with everything else.
I did Spine with Dr. Chutkan. It's an excellent experience for all. He's very well-respected nationwide and is very intelligent. It's just you, him and the resident, so you get to work closely with them. 2 clinic days, 2 OR days and a flex day. Occasionally in all Ortho you'll go to a surrounding city for an away clinic for half a day (i.e. I went to Thomson one day). In Spine, Hardware reps take you out to eat a lot, which is very nice. There's not a lot of pimping but there's a good bit of teaching. Mark, the PA that works with you in clinic, is very helpful. After this rotation I know how to read Plain Films and MRI's very well, learned excellent physical exam skills in regards to back/neck/limp pain and paresthesias.

Also, weekends are very relaxed. Sometimes you don't have to work that much or at all depending on your service. And if it's obvious that you're not interested in surgery, sometimes they'll just tell you to do a different service for a day or let you stay home when people do roaming clinics (i.e. on Peds Ortho).

You start with morning conference at 6:30 every day, meaning you're already getting more sleep than most of the people on other rotations. I also did Spine with Dr. Chutkan, and it was great. Two OR days (he does some slick stuff, lemme tell ya), two clinic days (back pain, back pain, back pain), and one flex day, when you'll likely find another clinic to help out with. I didn't have to work weekends. Had a lot of fun, learned a lot, got a free lunch with an equipment rep, and walked out with an A. Great rotation! If I were going to be a surgeon, I'd choose ortho, and it's all because of these two weeks. Really.

Peds Ortho: 6:30am with all of ortho Surgeries are listed in the black peds ortho book. Be prepared.... peds OR is a bit warmer than adult. It takes a while to master wearing the face mask and shield. Always double glove on ortho surgeries (although they forgot to tell me this at the beginning). Clinic... CP, fractures, scoliosis, club foot. I went to the Athen's clinic as well; it was fast paced but no pressure. Be ready to listen to NPR on the way. You don't have to write any notes, and the guys are really great to work with! They will easily do teaching points if anything's unclear. It's a lot of fun and more laid back, so just enjoy learning and doing and then go home to get a full night's sleep (and study for the shelf).
