this rotation is ok. you have to be there at like 530, which is a drag. then you get to collect in's and out's from the night before and tell your resident what they are. then you follow the resident as he does morning rounds. after that, you stand in the o.r. till lunch or so. Usually if this is a laproscopic case then you might be able to hold the camera. if it's not, you might retract. the doctors are pretty nice for the most part. Dr. hatley expects you to go to lecture. after that was over we would stick around for a little while longer and then go home around 6.
you probably won't be able to do too much on this rotation at all, I dont think much is really expected from the students because the attends pretty much do everything, even write the orders. some of the surgeries are interesting, and they dont take too long because the kids dont have tons of fat and adhesions (usually). some people find the attendings hit or miss, but they were pretty nice to me and ashley. dr. hatley likes it if you have scissors and lube in your pocket during clinic. I'm pretty sure hatley is the only one who is involved in grading students, so use that for what it's worth. I think he gives everyone around a 88-91 type grade.
Oh, and Dr. Howell's son is a pro golfer and talking about him is the only thing in the world that he likes to do, so information about the PGA tour is much more vaulble than medical stuff when you're hanging out with him.
