Vascular is a good core service to be on to get exposure to surgery. You will get to see a lot more procedures than a lot of your classmates as there are only 2 half days of clinic with the remainder of the time spent with patients and procedures. Dr. Wynn has kidney transplant pts that require some special care and following of their vitals and meds on a door chart that you have to keep up with quite well.

My month on Vascular was not my favorite. It was nice b/c we didn't have a huge patient load, but we also didn't have a huge number of interesting surgeries. There were only 4 kidney transplants the whole month (sometimes there are 4 in a week!!!). We were kinda lucky that one of the attendings took general surgery call a few weekends so we got to see some general surgery patients. We had a lot of downtime, but it was hard to get any studying done. We also had a Chief that would keep us around instead of letting us go home. To be fair, we'd often not round until 5pm - so we'd be there late anyway. We had a Sub-I my month. It was nice b/c the Sub-I and the 3rd year resident handled the ICU pts AND the transplant patients (so the intern and the two JMSs only managed the floor patients - our max pt load was 5). The bad part was that he got preference for which surgeries he got to see - luckily our Sub-I was great and he made sure not to hog surgeries and to make sure we all got to see a variety of things. Overall, it was an ok month and I think your experience depends on the pt volume. The attendings have reputations of being mean, but I loved them and they were super nice to me and the other student.
