No test, no call, no weekends, no presentations. What more could you ask for?
If you are considering a career in Path I would strongly recommend this elective. You will get a good idea of what private practive Path is all about. You will see a lot of surgical pathology. A typical day consists of reviewing slides that were grossed the previous day in the morning. At 11A there is a consensus conference where all the pathologists review interesting cases or need some opinions. Around 1130 they usually eat lunch. After lunch, go back and review slides or read. The afternoons are when the pathologists gross surgical specimens. You usually watch so it can be boring at times.
I usually got in around 8-815 and left by 5, until I realized that no one was keeping an eye on me, so I started leaving early (3 or 4). Tuesday morning at 7 sharp is breast conference. All surgeons, radiation oncologist, oncologist, radiologist and pathologist get together and discuss upcoming breast cancer cases. It's usually pretty informative. Every other Wednesday is lung conference. Not as strongly attended (and pretty boring) as the breast conference. Most pathology you will get exposed to is breast and uterus. You will spend about 2 days in Blood Bank (arrive around 7AM), and one day in Micro (arrive around 6:30).
The pathologists are really nice, there are 2 newer ones (just finished residency/fellowship 8 months ago) and 4 older ones that have been in practice for >15 years. I spend most days reading something (which can get borrowing at times), but you see and learn a lot. Dr. Daspit is part-time and maybe retiring soon. She is really nice, but I got the feeling that she is not interested in teaching. Therefore, I would not watch her gross or bother her.
