Hey guys,
Liz and I worked a lot on the curriculum this summer, and we wanted to let you guys know of the major changes that have occurred in the 2nd year curriculum.
See the schedule at the end of this post to see the major structural changes. Here are the major points.
- all of the physical diagnoses classes for ECM will be at the beginning of the year, in a 2 week isolated block
- All ECM classes that are not associated with a block will be in “intersessions” spaced at the end of each module. These will be little 1 week sections between each module to cover specific areas such as Women’s Health, Pediatrics, and Clinical/Legal aspects.
- Physical Diagnosis with the preceptors (interviews at the hospital) will be very different this year. Instead of doing 4 adult, 2 peds over the entire year, each student will be assigned to a preceptor. They will go with their preceptor group every 2 weeks (non-test week) and will go and do the exam together with their preceptor. This will allow time for the preceptor to show how the exam is done and be able to see certain pathology in patients. This will occur throughout the entire year, and will allow the students to see many patients (more than just 6).
- Hematology will be incorporated in the Cardio module, and will be at the beginning of the year.
- All courses will have a “core instructor” that will teach the more than 80% of the lectures in the course. This will avoid a large variability in instructors.
- More organization to the lectures will be implemented in each module, using the advice that was given by the course evaluations.
The curriculum committee is debating on the requirement of laptops for the class of 2010. This will allow testing to be done on computers, and more interactive lectures. If you have any thoughts, feedback, etc, on this issue or any other issue, let Liz or myself know.
