I know alot of you have been wondering why we have to complete the SPEL (Student Patient Encounter Log). Liz and I wanted to send out an email explaining why we are required to do these logs. The curriculum committee is compiling a database of what types of diagnoses that we see in each rotation. The LCME (Liaison Committee for Medical Education) are the people that allow MCG and all medical schools to maintain accreditation. They are recommending that all medical students must see certain diagnoses sometime in their medical education. Therefore, MCG and the clerkship directors are trying to determine the best way to monitor students encounters. Hence, the reasoning behind the SPEL on one45. It is a work in progress, and they are open for suggestions from us. If any of you would like to give us feedback, we can bring it up at the curriculum meetings. Hope this helps you understand the reason behind completing your logs.
