I decided to do my ER rotation at an away site because I got screwed in the lottery. I'm not from Columbus but had some friends here during the month, so that's why I came.
This was absolutely an incredible experience for ER. I was the only student in the ER working directly with the attendings and NPs and PAs. This is a busy ER with a trauma bay as well (believe it or not). I worked 15 shifts during the 4 weeks, and was assigned to a few different shifts (8p-7a, 10a-7p, 9a-5p, 5p-3a). I really enjoyed working here. Everyone is incredibly nice and willing to teach. I was able to tons of procedures (thoracentesis, lines, and suturing--even facial). They are willing to let you do whatever you feel comfortable doing. I would see a ton of patients each shift....Basically I would go and see whatever new patient that comes in, do a quick H&P, and present to an attending. No note writing. They put in the orders and you can follow up on each patient. If something comes into the trauma bay, you can go and observe that as well.
If you havent done a rotation in Columbus yet, the housing is kinda ghetto. But it works....no internet which sucks, but Panera bread has free internet. The Medical Center has free breakfast and lunch in the doctor's lounge, and they also give you $5 coupons to use every day in the cafeteria. So you are taken care of all meals but dinner. They have a FP residency only, so sometimes those residents are in the ER rotating. Overall, it was a great experience to get away from MCG, and I would recommend it to anyone that got a bad lottery number or just wanted to go away for a month. =)
