Great rotation to do in Miami. MCH is the only children's
hospital in Miami and is in a nicer part of town than
MiamiU/Jackson Hospital. It's a really great hospital in
terms of being ranked in the top 20 straight up hospitals
nationwide and has lots of great research for a private
hospital.
The Hem/Onc service is rad. It's generally 7am-4pm
but residents will often kick you out earlier than that.
"Call" consists of you staying 'til 6pm and then most
residents want you to go home. No weekends. The
attendings all love to teach, particularly Dr. DeAngulo
and Dr. Fort. They have a 3-bed BMT and will let you
follow a patient with the senior resident if you want to
do so. They have over 20 beds on the unit, too, and
the nurses are wonderful (as are most Onc nurses).
There's a high proportion of hispanic patients that don't
speak english but most residents will give you the english
speakers if you don't want the spanish-only/mostly folk.
The teaching rounds and noon conferences are awesome.
The MCH residents consistently score in the top 15 nationwide
each year on the Resident Exams and have a great boards
pass rate (90%+). Radiology rounds is particularly good.
You get free food every day for lunch and meal card for
nights on call.
A lot of people worry about the residents because many if
not most of them are from foreign medical schools. The
residents are all great and very intelligent, hence their high
boards and in-service exams speaking for themselves. They
were all top of their class from wherever and are usually
latino themselves. We had a 3rd and 2nd year residents from
MCG down there who said they absolutely loved it there
and so did I.
