General Radiolgy Info
Some boring but important statistics...
Radiology is a 5 year residency (1 year Prelim/Transitional + 4 Radiolgy) Prelim year can be surgery or medicine
Radiology is a competitive field: There were 902 spots nationwide for PGY-2 positions beginning in 2008, 17 unfilled.
Median Step 1 score is 232 for Matched U.S seniors, ranking radiology in the top 5 based on median scores for matching.
Radiology had the highest number of programs ranked in order to be matched: 13
Ranking > 7 programs gave you a >90% chance of matching.
Generally, in my opinion, matching is a numbers game, if you have them, you will match, if you dont, its hard to compensate for it. Harsh reality. Similar to Mims rap song : "I'm hot 'cause I'm fly/You ain't 'cause you not."
Advisor: Dr. Joe is great, has been a match advisor for years, knows a lot of people at different programs. Give him your CV and Board scores and he will give you a straight answer.
Letters: One radiology letter is enough, and 3 others from other departments.
Away rotations: I didn't do one but if there is one program that stands out to you and would love to attend then do a rotation there.
Number of programs to apply to: Lots, > 20, if you get at least 10 interviews, you are a competitive applicant. You always want to be in a position to cancel interviews rather than applying to more late. Send you application in on the first day it opens. Do not hesitate to call/email programs after you have sent in your app and let them know you are interested.
Depending on your scores, apply across tiers, meaning big name schools like Wake, Vandy, UAB, then some middle tier schools and some 3rd tier schools.
Research: Not required but can be helpful if radiology related. Not heavily emphasized during interviews.
Interview: Important Q's: Call schedule, moonlighting, time off to attend conferences(RSNA), Call during board prep, AFIP.
Auntminne.com is a message board for radiology. The forums are mostly filled with crap but can find some useful information.
