Gainesville is a new site in 2008-2009. They are still getting the kinks worked out at this time, so this info may change. This is a good site if you like hands-on. There are no residents and very few students, so you will work directly with attendings and midwives. It's also a private practice which works in a hospital with other practices, so you'll get to see what that's like. You will catch tons of babies. You will first assist C-sections. You will drive the laproscope. The OR is a lot less crowded than MCG and you will do more than hold retractors. What you won't do is: spend much time in clinic, write notes (all electronic), endless rounds (usually attendings see pts in between cases alone), presentations (no big team... no rounds). You also will mainly shadow in the clinic. Since these are private patients and they move patients in and out much faster - there isn't time. You can do your H&Ps in the hospital. The attendings they pair you with are eager to teach - but since they are just starting, they haven't done it yet and aren't sure what to teach yet. The midwives are great, and all have their own style. Try to see a waterbirth just for the experience.
Free lunch everyday in the doctor's lounge or from drug reps. Hours were long with lots of call and weekends, but I think they are changing the schedule to be compatible with study time, so don't go on that. Housing is close (~1.5 miles). Rooms are shared (2 per room) but the apt is not always full. Shared bathroom, kitchen, wireless internet, TV (no cable).
Gainesville is ~1hr north of Atlanta. If you have free time outlet malls, mountain bike trails, hiking/trail running, Lake Lanier, and Dolonaga are close by.
